In Britain, we are incredibly lucky to be surrounded by some of the most beautiful natural places. Whether you live by the sea or find peace in city parks, nature is all around us.

At Surrey Hills Conservation, we care deeply about protecting our country’s natural beauty. We want to make sure that people for many years to come can enjoy all the wonderful green spaces we have.

We do this through different conservation projects. These projects help to protect nature’s homes, encourage plants and animals to grow, and bring back wildness to areas that have been changed by towns and cities.

Conservation grazing in Britain’s wild places

Sometimes, the problem isn’t that a place has too many buildings. Instead, it’s that a place is too wild. It needs a lot of help to become a good home for nature.

One great way to make green spaces better, in a natural way, is through conservation grazing. This means using animals to help look after open areas.

Conservation grazing, sometimes called ‘targeted grazing’, is when animals like ponies, sheep, goats, or cattle are used. They help to keep grasslands, woodlands, and other natural areas healthy and full of different kinds of life.

The animals simply do what they do best: they graze the land. This helps to keep the natural balance. It’s a gentle way of looking after the land, as long as too many animals don’t eat too much in one spot.

Different animals are good for different jobs because they all have their own ways of eating and favourite foods:

  1. Sheep are a bit fussy! They can pick out unwanted plants like dock or nettle in grasslands. They also eat the grass very short, making the area look neat and even.
  2. Goats will eat almost anything, which is super helpful for clearing away tough, woody plants from grassy areas.
  3. Horses and ponies are always munching close to the ground. This helps to create different heights of plants, which is good for many small creatures.
  4. Cows can pull up longer plants, which helps to make the plant life more varied and interesting.

Why conservation grazing is so important

Conservation grazing is a natural and sustainable way to manage our landscapes. It helps to create a mix of different habitats, which is much harder to do with machines. This means more places for different plants and animals to live and thrive.

It also helps to keep our green spaces healthy and beautiful, which is good for everyone. By using animals to graze, we can help nature to look after itself, making our countryside even richer and more diverse.

Preserving Britain’s green spaces for the future

We need projects like conservation grazing because they help us do so much more than just create lovely wildlife areas. They can also help to stop animals and plants from disappearing forever and even play a part in fighting climate change right where we live.

At Surrey Hills Conservation, we have many years of experience setting up conservation projects in Surrey and the areas around us.

Through our work, we are able to create and look after natural places that are good for everyone: the people, the animals, and the plants that all share these spaces.

We are always curious about new ways to make our country’s green spaces better. We are full of new ideas and truly care about every project we take on.
